John & Julie Gottman: What Really Works in Therapy: Myths and Realities

Session#: 715-002

John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman cofounded The Gottman Institute and cocreated the couples workshop, The Art and Science of Love. They are world-renowned for their work on marital stability and divorce prediction and have authored more than 41 books.
Famous for 42 years of pioneering and award-winning research on marriage, John Gottman has revolutionized the way therapists think about couples with his ability to predict the long-term success of marriages given small cues in the way spouses interact with each other from their earliest days together. For nearly two decades, he and his wife Julie, have brought the tough-minded discipline of science to the notoriously messy, ambiguities and unsupported theories of couples therapy--often with surprisingly optimistic results.
John's the author of 190 published academic articles and author or coauthor of 41 books, including The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work; What Makes Love Last; The Relationship Cure; Why Marriages Succeed or Fail; and Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, among many others. Together the Gottmans are the cofounders of The Gottman Institute. Julie is the author or coauthor of Ten Lessons to Transform Your Marriage; And Baby Makes Three; and The Marriage Clinic Casebook.
As they'll demonstrate, their discoveries highlight how happy marriages come in many different styles--but not necessarily in accord with popular, or even clinical, preconceptions of what they should be. The Gottmans will separate myth from reality in our ideas about what works in developing their craft of couples therapists.
