Esther Perel: The New Rules of Love and Commitment

Session#: 715-006

Her groundbreaking first book, Mating in Captivity, introduced Americans to the inherent conflict in even the most successful marriages in which partners love each other very much but have sexual relationships that are dull and devoid of eroticism. Ever since, couples therapist Esther Perel has been recognized as one of the world's most original and insightful thinkers about couples, sexuality, and the peculiar paradoxes besetting modern marriage in the Western world.
A native Belgian, fluent in nine languages, and a penetrating observer of the social and cultural patterns shaping our relationships, she's a practicing psychotherapist and organizational consultant to Fortune 500 companies, as well as an eloquent and wildly popular speaker. Her 2013 TED talk, "The Secret to Desire in a Long-Term Relationship," began with what she called the million dollar question: "Can we want what we already have?" Her talk attracted more than a million hits in the first month after its release.
Perel will bring her rare gift for speaking the unspoken--articulating the hidden psychological states most people can't yet put into words--to her talk about the complicated and contradictory needs that are shaping marriage and commitment today.
